How To Choose What Twitter Tool To Use
Picking the right Twitter tools to use can be a daunting task. It seems like almost daily something new is coming out. Some are web based, some run on your desktop and some are for your mobile phone. What makes one better than the 300 others all claiming to be the best at what they do?
The answer: The best application is the one that fits your needs.
I know that sounds kinda lame, but it’s true. If you have an app like Tweetdeck and you don’t use any of the features, it probably isn’t the right choice for you. You could most likely use a browser add on like Twitterbar.
To choose what tool to use, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Besides posting an update or tweet, how do I use Twitter?
This can be easily answered if you have set up a social media strategy. If not, that may be a great place to start.
Once you decide what you want to accomplish using sites like Twitter, you will be able to better gauge if an application will fit your needs.
2. Do I need to access other sites besides Twitter?
A lot of the apps out there have been updated so you can access at least Twitter and Facebook. Others allow access to Likedin, Myspace and others too.
If you don’t need more access, keep it simple. Perhaps you can get away with using Twitter from the Twitter site, If you need more features, desktop and web apps like Seesmic, Hootsuite, Tweetdeck, Twirl, or one of the may others may be what you are looking for.
3. Do I need to be able to access my account from multiple computers?
If this is a necessity for you, perhaps a web based option may be in order. Because you don’t need to worry about where you are, what the operating system is or if they have your preferred desktop application installed. All you will need is a computer and an internet connection.
If this is the case, Seesmic or Hootsuite might be what the doctor ordered.
4. Are you tied to a desk all day?
If not, there are tons of great applications for all of the smartphone platforms. I personally use a Blackberry and have tried 5 different apps.I’ve settled on Ubertwitter. It offers the best balance of features and ease of use for my usage.
There really isn’t a right or wrong application for using Twitter. The main thing is to make sure it is easy to use. If the application feels like a work, you wont want to use it.
How did you settle on what application to use?
