3 Twitter Clients for Blackberry

Anyone who knows me will tell you I am addicted to my Blackberry. It is like an organizational and internet enabled appendage; I use it for everything. Part of what I do at my day job is to find programs and devise ways to make these devices more consumer friendly.

I am finding myself using Twitter more and more during the day for various tasks. Because of this, I have been exploring different programs to use Twitter from my Blackberry Curve. Below are three of the applications I have tried with some thoughts about them. When a others come out of their super secret squirrel alpha or beta testing, I’ll do a follow-up post about those.

Twitterberry

twitterberry

Of the three applications, Twittterberry is the most basic. It allows all of the essential actions, but but strips away a lot of the additions which can complicate things.

The main focus of Twitterberry is posting new updates, viewing your DMs, @mentions and friend’s updates. For simple tasks such as a quick update to my status or shooting a calendar appointment to @gcal via DM. Twitterberry is even easier than sending a SMS (text message). The default page when you open the application is the status update page. This can be changed in the configure menu.

If you are looking for multiple account access, URL shrinking, and grouping…this is not the application for you. Download Page

UberTwitter

For a few weeks, I used Ubertwitter. It is a widely popular application which combines many functions of Twitter with native (built in) applications on the Blackberry. The next two applications may be a bit advanced for some, but I will go ahead and throw them out there anyway.

Little things like having the option to follow/ unfollow a person, view pictures, post pictures and shrink URLs are all damn handy to have in one application. I really like how it is laid out. Of the three applications in this post, UberTwitter is the most well rounded and still easy to use.

When you open the application, the default screen is your timeline. This can be changed in the settings if you would rather have your direct messages or @mentions come up first.

Scrolling down to a tweet and clicking on it brings you to another window. In the new window you can see the tweet and can access the link in the tweet (if there was one), persons profile and attached picture (if there was one).

Pictures will show up as an icon in the main timeline as well as in the window that lets you access the tweet.

The options menu gives a wide variety of choices by hitting the Blackberry Applications button. Download Page

Tweetcaster

Tweetcaster

Tweetcaster is a little different than the other two. When I am not near a computer and want to check my DMs on a couple of my accounts, this is the application of choice. I like the features it has to offer; many are things I use on a regular basis on my laptop. The multitude of features gives you a mobile experience much like your desktop. To me, this made it a bit more complicated to use while on the go. For a simple update, it takes more steps than Twitterberry to fire off an update.

If you are a Twitter power user, this application will not leave you wanting much. Multiple account access, URL shrinking, search and trending topics are all accessable from your Blackberry.

One thing I would like to see in a future version of TweetCaster is having some intigration into the Blackberry menu. If I am reading an email and someone sends their Twitter username to me, it would be nice to follow them by highlighting, clicking the Blackberry Applications button and scrolling to follow.

Technically TweetCaster is an application with a cost of $4.99USD, but they are offereing it free in exchange for a tweet from you.  Download Page

  1. Can You Buy A Twitter Account?

  2. I don’t think it would be as technical as buying a website. It would be something you would have to contact the account owner and hash it out with them.
